The bedroom plays a crucial role in your health and wellbeing, acting as a restorative space where your mind and body resets each night. A thoughtfully designed bedroom free of toxins, filled with natural materials, and optimised for rest can significantly enhance your sleep quality and overall vitality. Here are our key design principles to transform your bedroom into a tranquil, health-focused sanctuary.

Rest, Reset & Recharge

The bedroom is where our bodies rejuvenate and detox each night, making it essential to prioritise a space that is clean, toxin-free, and thoughtfully designed. By embracing the following principles, you can create an environment that supports restful sleep and enhances your overall health and wellbeing.

Choose a hard floor over a carpet

Hard floor finishes such as timber, tile or stone are easier to keep clean and don’t trap the same amount of dust and allergens as a carpet. If possible, install underfloor heating so it’s cosy when you’re barefoot or use a big rug (natural fibre of course!) that can be hoovered regularly and removed from the room for deep-cleaning or airing outside.

Use nature’s blackout blinds

Most mass-produced blackout blinds and curtains contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which is applied to the back of the fabric to stop light passing through it.  PVC is one of the worst plastics for off-gassing and will pollute the air as you sleep. Instead look for curtains and blinds with a lining made from natural wool felt or heavy, dark cotton.

Keep lighting warm & dimmable

Lighting in a bedroom should be low-wattage, very warm (2700 Kelvin and below) and dimmable for ultimate control to prevent disrupting  your circadian rhythm. We like to incorporate bedside lamps for general illumination as well as an adjustable reading light ensuring proper illumination for reading and preventing eye strain.

Ensure your window is fully operable

To help with the detoxification process that happens when we sleep, give yourself a head start by sleeping with the window open a jar, if the weather allows. Keeping the bedroom on the cooler side helps lower your body temperature which is critical for deep, restorative sleep, as is proper ventilation.

Invest in natural, organic materials

Choose organic, natural fibres for bed linen, preferably from Europe which eliminates the need for pesticides in shipping and pop them over a natural latex or wool mattress. Natural latex and wool are inherently breathable and hypoallergenic whereas conventional mattresses are laden with chemicals that add to your toxic load whilst you sleep.
